Re: current build

Thanks for that. I am going to contact them to see what the speed rating is for those tYres. Right now the front is a steel Mini wheel 3 1/2" wide with a Yokohama A008 tYre. The A008 is designed for a 4 1/2" Mini Cooper rim. Fitting it to a 3 1/2" rim rounds the tread slightly and makes its a bit easier to steer. Right now I'm tyred of tiping.

Re: current build

A lot of build threads just sort of fade away as this one did. So heres the end. A decent burial if you like. "Screwball" the sidecar (so named after a friend looking at it early in its construction declared it "an effin' screwball idea") made five runs during the season. At the October meet there was a lot of wind. We were held for a couple of hours until the wind died a bit. The wind varied from a head wind to an almost cross wind. When I got to the line it was almost a head wind. The starter gave me to go signal and as I left the line I could see a big dust cloud heading across the course about a mile out. I figured I could beat it but I ran straight into it and couldn't see a damn thing! I hit a bump and as the back end came up off the ground I got knocked forward and involuntarily shut the throttle. I lost all the momentum and crossed the line at 112. Pissed me off no end! The Nov. meet was pretty bad. A couple of days before the meet my brother-in-law died suddenly. I was going to skip the meet but my wife said there was nothing we could do and I should go. I should have stayed home. A coil wire broke and the result was a turn out.

Last Sat. was the SCTA awards dinner. I picked up the record trophy. 5 runs 3 records. A good season!

Re: current build

The plan for this year is to run the El Mirage season ( 6 meets, May thru Nov.). The fuel record in my class is 110. I want to go after it. And getting it past 130 is still the main goal. The plan also includes SpeedWeek at Bonneville in August. As I am getting on in years time is running out. The gas and fuel records at Bonneville in the 500 sidecar class are pretty soft so I want to go see if I can kill them. The problem (for me at any rate) is the entry fee is $400 and a class change is $300. Add in the cost of gas to get there and back. 1600 miles in a 30 year old RV towing a trailer adds up and it gets a bit sketchy. I work for NAPA and am trying to convince them to sponsor me. I'm too small a fish for headquarters in Atanta to consider. You need to be the Ron Capps type looking for millions and guaranteeing huge TV coverage to get them to think about you. So my sponsorship, should it happen, would come from a local distribution center level. So far they haven't said no. So I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I've made a few minor changes. Got rid of that ugly platform I had to put on because my interpretation of the rules was different to that of the tech guys. Sent some photos to the head of tech and its approved. Lengthened the sidecar fairing and filled in the ugly gap at the back. Not a lot of other changes planned. Its working so leave well enough alone. The engine and trans will come out this week for a once over. I don't expect any surprises. I was thinking about making a new body. I have a more streamlined shape in my head. But that will happen only if I have time to do it right.
