British Hot Rod

Heres my hot rod project, 1980 MGB V8...perfect running right now with following in it: body redone in and out, 68 Rover V8 (215 cu.in. all aluminum engine)with .30 over/silvolite pistons/comp cam with edelbrock performer intake and 4-barrel carb, S-10 5 speed tranny, ford diff, stereo.....going to change the following: new crossmember with front end improvements, grant steering wheel, switch points in dist. to prestolite elec/ignition and 45,000V coil, true dual exhaust (maybe side exit if I can get it to fit), RV8 header through fender wall to replace block hugger ones(will increase flow and hp by 20).....this little car puts out 200hp now with a weight a little over a ton....bloody fast, had it up to 130mph! and still pulling

Re: British Hot Rod

Pressed steel rocker covers?

On a Rover V8?

Back a couple of decades or so, I did the full sill set, floorpans, rear inner arches, rear lower wing halves, couple of spring hangers, back panel, trumpet sections, a repair on the scuttle, hung new doors wings and a bonnet (cause the "hood" is what keeps the rain off you), on a "B" roadster in 8 hours.

But once was enough...

Re: British Hot Rod

Cool little buggy ya got there. I used to work on them back in the early 70's and found them to be a lot of fun. The Land Rover engine is a Buick engine if I remember correctly, electronic ignition should be easy to come by. They were quick with a four banger I can just imagine what it does with that LR/Buick engine sitting in it.

Re: British Hot Rod

And it looks like it has earlier bumpers on it cause in the early 70's they switched to 5 mph bumpers that looked big and clumsy and were black rubber - unless that was only in the US.

Re: British Hot Rod

Yes.....the rover was originally a buick made engine that they discontinued in 63, leyland motors bought the tool and dies and hence was born the rover V8 which is still in production but bigger at 4.5 litres, in the 70's Buick wanted to buy the rights back but leyland declined. The rocker covers could be original or off a older buick I don't know, ...can order some cool aluminum rover ones but they are a bit$$ and not priority at moment. the tranny is a T-5 chev out of a S10 truck same tranny GM puts in alot of there older trucks and cars including I believe the camaro at one time, diff is a 8" out of a ford, professionally narrowed. The bumpers are from a 73 and repalce the ugly (although safer) all rubber ones.

Re: British Hot Rod

Odin, that's cool as hell!!! I'm envious...

In the day, ('75) I bought a '72 Triumph Spitfire Mk IV. It had the last 1350cc engine (1500 for '73, if memory serves) and it was hopelessly underpowered.

But I worshipped that car! Noisy, hot, smelly (they installed the mildew smell at the factory) Loved it to pieces! White, with 3 black stripes down the side.

**sigh**

This is where I learned that the word "Lucas" was Anglo-Saxon term for "junk".
