I can't Believe This Crap!!!!

I got a job referral from the employment office yesterday (1st one) for the Coca-Cola Company near me. It was for a part time perminent position as a route account clerk. I thought, hell yeah a job with a strong company!!! Get there this morning to fill the app and the lady told me to sit and she'd go get an app for me. She comes back as the first thing she does is ask if I smoke, I said yes, she flat told me its cokes policy to not even take apps for anyone who smokes....sorry you wasted your time goodbye and walks off. I go outside to my car call employment office and they said yeah they can do that if its a national wide company policy.......WTH!?! So it they had a nation wide policy to not hire bikers that'd be ok too?

Re: I can't Believe This Crap!!!!

Alot of companies have an unwritten policy to not hire bikers, that is one reason I would never take my motorcycle to a job interview unless it was with an HD dealer or something similar.

And in an interview always tell them what they want to hear. If they ask if you are a smoker tell them no (unless the interview is with Phillip Morris). Tell them you just quit if they ask and if they see you smoking after they hire you tell them you had quit but you just relapsed. It's not a lie, you quit smoking just before the interview and relapsed right after the interview was over.

Although I don't smoke anymore and I wouldn't want to be insdie a smoke filled room for dinner or a meeting, this is the US of A and if you want to smoke it's your right. It doesn't make you a bad person.

The lady told me they make their employees sign a legal form swearing they don't smoke, if its found later that you do, your fired on the spot.

Re: I can't Believe This Crap!!!!

I checked this out with my X, she is a Human Resources VP for a large company. There is a law suite being filed in federal court, but for now its legal for them to do this.

Re: I can't Believe This Crap!!!!

Since when is it a companies business what you do with your own time?????

Smoking on their time...... well that I can understand....

Smoking and health insurance costs..... that I can understand too.... (usually if you smoke...it just costs you more)

Now a days there are no places to smoke like there were years ago.... Hell... we all smoked at work! And smokes were relatively cheap.... (I could not afford my old 2 pack a day habit of years ago) Food service people did not wear gloves! Etc etc.... But now times have changed! Seems like being a smoker is now the minority.... where years ago it was just the opposite. Here in New York State.... I don't know of any public places that allow smoking.... you cant smoke in bars! (or restaurants). What are the laws like in your state?

Its funny that they can not discriminate against religion or sexual preference or race..... BUT this.... well it is only their business in regards to the insurance issue (as far as I am concerned)..... it all comes down to money!

Being an ex smoker.... I easily overlook these things..... (non smoking doesn't cause a problem) I can sympathize with the smoker..... (not that I recommend smoking .... and would recommend quiting) but it is your life to do with as you choose! When a company is that controlling.... you really have to ask yourself.... would I really want to work for such a controlling company?????

Good luck on the job hunting!!!!!
