1978 XS750 E

"enfield" and I did a road run today to pick up this winters project. Member "CB750chopper" was kind enough to offer this up to me on the cheap, infact pick it up and its yours cheap!! Thanks man, appreciate that and enfield, Thanks for helping man!

Do you have the vision? This XS750 E model, frame style and the fact that it is a shafty means its going to be a cafe type project. In the pictures I have removed some of the ass end crap and moved the tail section up damn near a foot to see how it will look, you know to get the "vision"!! I will whack about a foot off the rear frame section at the tail section.

Picture a cafe style seat, bike lowered, clip on bars...yadda yadda, Cafe!! All in all I think it will be a fun project. First thing first, will have to fire it and see how it is. I dont suspect any surprises, appears to have great compression, wiring is in very good shape but certainly the carbs will have to come apart and I will rebuild them before I go any further.

I should have takin a pic of it as we found it with a tree growing around the handlebars. Funny how just a few mods can change the looks. Should have some crazy power being a 3 cyl 750 w/ 3 in one pipe. And a kicker option too. Should be interesting to see it develop.

A little update. The bike sat for a few years and had never been fired up. Apparantly when it was parked there was an issue with poor running etc and I was told it was an center cylinder issue. I prepped the bike and fired it up and true to life it ran on just two cylinders.

Sure as heck the center cylinder showed little to no compression. I pulled the cam cover to have a better look. I found the cams and caps to be in fantastic condition, most likely due to regular oil changes.

I turned it over by hand and watched as all valves turned freely as the should. Hmmmmm. no stuck valve. I pulled the pipes and had a good look in the exhaust opening and saw what appeared as a burnt valve.

I pulled the head and VOILA........cooked exhaust valve! The surprising thing is that the head and valve seat, pistons and cylinder bore are in perfect condition!

I called the stealer and they want $78 for one valve!!!!!!!! Not gonna happen so the hunt for used in on.

Prior to pulling the head I measured the valve clearances and found the 2 outer were some what tight and the center cylinder was almost nil, resulting in the valve not seating and burning up!

The morale is if you are going to do good regular maintenance then dont forget to check valve clearances.

Thats not to bad of a fix.. except for the price the steeler wants...Keep post progress.. I would like to find a xs650 to do when I get the 79 done.. Raining here today... but not cold.
