Custom Cable How To

After changing bars, I had stuck those stock black cables on because the braided cables from the apes were just way to long. I like the look of braided lines and cables..so took a trip over to a friends place and dug through his stash of cables, found a few braided that were to long...grabbed a few cable ends from his barnett kit and decided to have a go at making my own custom cables...here's how it turned out.

Measured and marked the braided sleeve.

Take one of the fittings for the cable ends and tapped it so I could thread it onto the cable sleeve for a secure fit.

Heated the coating on the sleeve and threaded the fitting on (kinda like a nylock?).

Cut the cable, slide the fitting over the cable, splayed the cable to give the solder something to bite to (kinda like rebar)...slide the fitting into place and get ready to solder.

Solid core solder and not water soluble liquid flux. The not water soluble flux is the key...flux core solder just doesn't seem to work very well at all...just falls off...you can pick that flux up at about any plumbing store.

I used a mini torch to heat up the fitting and cable..couple drops of flux and let the solder suck into the splayed end and onto the fitting....hit it with a file to clean up the solder and there you have a custom length cable.

Done the other cable and clutch cable also, checked em with a couple hard tugs to make sure the end was secure and there wasn't any slipping...seemed every bit as strong as the ends on the factory cable and do not feel worried about them at all. I don't think they turned out bad at all for a first timer.

While I was at my friends shop I picked up this old sign for a little garage wall swag....not bad for a freebie.

Re: Custom Cable How To

Great post. I have done cables very similar to that and never had a failure, ever. Good job!

Nice Hooty but everything you do you do well. I haven't shortened a cable in years but the way I did them back then was not at all as professional as the way you just did it.
