My Hack project
I'd like to build my own rig, maybe with an old wing tank for the chair. I'd like to be able to put it on, or off with a minimum of hassle. I'm thinking of using my Ironhead Sporty and building an Afrika Corp on/off road rig for camping. Any Idea's or books that are worth buying? Thanks,

OK,m first, when you put a sidecar on a biek it is thre to stay, ro come off to stay off. The idea of a quick detach sidecar is a myth. They take quite a bit of set up, once everythign it set and working, you do NOT want to disturb those settings. A half to 3/4 inch toe in over an 8 foot length is the goal. Set wheel stagger at about 10 inches to a foot in front of the bikes rear wheel. (measured at the axle). Set lean out at 3 degrees to start and increase lean out as needed to adjust for pull or push. OK, so thats the basics. Now for the chassis, I like a simple box chassis for the hack with a swingarm. Note, if the bike is a rigid, then the hack can be a rigid, but if the bike has a suspension, then the hack needs suspension. If you want to log in at the barn I can post a boat load of photo's of my XS1100 sidecar rig as it went together. Ought to be a lot of photo's there that you'll find helpfull. Email me at Motopsycho@wat.midco.net if I can be of any help

Re: My Hack project
Ok, two opposite opinions here. One easy on and off and one hard on and off and belive me the last thing I would want (especially today) is to see the two of you get into a pissing match over this. I realize that the set up is something specialized. I belive HD has a side car manual. But niether of you mentioned the front end. HD uses an adjustable rake triple tree for side hack rigs and trikes. How does rake have to be adjusted for the side hack and does that adjustment then give you high speed problems?

Re: My Hack project
I am not certain on how the HD manual or parts work out for a hack. Admitedly, my hack knowledge is limited but I do know that Lunatic is a guru with hack fabrication with many years experiance and has set up many and helped many out. I was always under the impression as well that there was no easy off set ups, maybe just them lil scooter hacks from years gone by. haha

Re: My Hack project
Hey MUTT, I'm not saying that LUNATIC dosen't know what he's talking about, I'm just stating the Fact's of what I know about Hack's, as for Front End's, a "LEADING LINK" is the KEY to a Great handling Front End! Here's the speck's of my Bike;
Speck's:
Year......1998
Make.....Harley-Davidson
Frame....H-D 4" Stretch, 39* Rake, 1" Rise in Center bar
Motor.....H-D/S&S Cases
Trans.....H-D 5 Speed w/S&S Case
Pipes.....H-D 2 into 1 w/Fishtail Muffler
Seat.......H-D Softail
Bars.......H-D Dresser
Forks.....H-D Wideglide
Wheels...H-D Softail
Paint.......Flat Black
Hack.......CHASSI Custom Made...COFFIN 1920's Toepincher (Real)
That is how my Bike is set-up & mine handles GREAT weather I'm Puttin' or Cruzin' at 60 to 80 MPH & my Bike is a Softail & my Hack is a Rigid!
As for a "GURU" of Hack's, "Doug Bingham" is the "KING of SIDECAR'S"...anybody that is into Hack's, know's Doug...here's his web addy,
Side Strider Sidecars and Accessories ...he will send you all the info you need on Mounting & Speck's...he not only Sell's, Install's, Make's Hack's...he was a well know "Hack Racer" & he also was the one who Mounted my 1st Hack & taught me what I know about Hack's! I'm no expert, but I have been Driving Hack's for over 20 Year's! Here's a pic of my 1st Hack mounted to a 1986 883 Sportster...
