Mulling over tank

I have been mulling over whether to switch tanks out on my bike or not from a Sportster tank to fatbobs. The 70 to 80 mile range with the Sportster tank is becoming annoying. However, I like the look and handling the bike has with the small narrow tank. Another concern is how the bike will handle with an additional three gallons of fuel. The bike is very nimble with the Sportster tank, and I'd hate to lose the lane splitting ability due to an awkward, bulky tank full of fuel. The upside is that it would be an easy switch back. Opinions?

I think the fat bobs look a lot better than the sporty. I would think since they sit lower than the sporty, you handling wouldn't be affected that much. You should be bringing your center of gravity down. JMO and I'm often wrong.

I'm a Fatbob freak, that being said, I like the Sporty tank. I can understand the mileage issue but a Sporty king tank gives you alittle more miles. JMHO. Oh yeah, I like the hell out of that bike.

Re: Mulling over tank

I am a big fan of the Sporty tank but the pic with the fat bob's looks pretty good too. Of course you can go with the king tank as already suggested or go with the 3.3 gallon newer style Sporty tank and if you Frisco either and relocate the petcock and the filler neck you can get even more capacity. You can also go with the 3.3 gallon fat bob tank instead of the five and keep the look a little trimmer. The bike will look less custom with the fat tanks.

So although I like the sporty tank I feel your pain with the capacity issue. You can always switch back and forth.

On a side note I would like to know the dimensions of your frame, stretch up and out if any and rake (30, 33 or 35 degrees) or if it's all stock dimensions?

Re: Mulling over tank

It's a bone stock '98 softail frame. I'm ready to try out my new paint gun, so I guess I will spray the tanks soon and get 'em mounted up. Will keep my progress updated. I appreciate the replies!
