'68 Sporty ?

I've got a guy on my delivery route that has a '68 Sporty that he has been working on/storing for years. The bike is all there....so he claims....but he says it needs carbs, a little wiring, seat redone, paint (like I care about paint...LOL), brakes, and probably tires. I'm sure there would be other stuff, there always is. It appears to have a little bit of sentimental value to him, which never helps in the bargaining process, but I'm thinking of trying to talk him out of it. My question is....what should I know about this bike?.....good, bad, whatever? I know squat about HD's anyway.

Appreciate any info y'all can give me.

Re: '68 Sporty ?

When you say "the bike is all there", it sounds like a basket case or a partial basket. One thing to look at is the back of the cases in the area where the rear chain runs to the tranny sprocket. Sporty's break chains and damage this part of the case, so check that out. But a Sporty basket I would say 500 to 800 bucks although I saw one recently for 400, it was missing the cylinders and heads.

But before any of this, make sure the paper is good. Harleys aren't that hard to work on except where you need special tools and Sporty's can be a lot of fun, except when they don't want to start and you have to kick the snot out of them.

Re: '68 Sporty ?

I know the carbs are off it and the seat and tank, other than that, I think it's still all together. This is just judging by what he has told me in the past.

Re: '68 Sporty ?

You'd still have to tear it right down to check everything to make sure it's good. A Sporty in that shape up here goes for about $1200 max.
