The Spankster Has Arrived

I am introducing myself.
My name is John, a.k.a "The Spankster". I am from the suburbs of Boston. I have a 1968 Harley Davidson Sportster kick and electric. It was my fathers 1st, he added the kick start to it. He took me for my 1st ride when I was 4, between him and the tank. Then graduated to the back when I was 5. He promised that he would give the bike someday. 1983 was the last time he had it going. He finally gave it to me in 1996. It sat in his basement from 83-96. He worked for Cyclecraft in Everett Mass. He got a Dresser in 1988. I got the Sportster and sunk some dough into it. I had it chromed, had the heads done, and painted it probably 5 times or so. I rode for a bunch of those years. Well, 8 years ago I put some more dough into it, I even got some Avon Venom X tires. I said "I am going to kick start it", well the first kick it started damn did it sound good. Especially with drag pipes. Down the road going 45 mph, the damn chain breaks and the engine just stopped and I was rolling, I finally came to a stop and oil was turning into a puddle under me. The chain wrapped around the sprocket 3 times and broke the sprocket cover, the bolts that hold the cover came out with pieces of the case, you can see inside my tranny, and then the chain wrapped so much that it pushed the starter up and broke the left side of the case. I was bummed with lots of swears included, I cried, literally. I called my friend and he picked me and my bike up. I called my dad crying. I didn't do anything with it for 8 years. My father died 4 years ago. I bought a rolling chassis for a big twin motor, I also have a 5 speed tranny that fits, I am going to cut the tranny section of the cases and hook up a belt drive from the engine to the tranny and have it fitted to the frame. I promised my father that I would get the bike going someday, and when I do, I am going to where he is buried and I am going to rev up that sucker so loud he is going to wake up and dig a nice hole above him with the respect of the 240 wheel.. I belong to a few other forums and found out about this one from one of them. Sorry so long of a story, but doesn’t everyone of us have one?

This was after the chain broke and busted both cases.

Re: The Spankster Has Arrived

Welcome!!!

I always wanted an Ironhead... always! I came this close (holds up two fingers) about 6-7 years ago with buying a pristine '75 XLCH.

Good thing that deal fell thru... heart patients have no business with kicker-only rides!

Look around in here, Spankster, for pic's of Roger Mason's Ironhead, (IMO- the gold standard for Iron bikes) then look at Hooty's active thread on his rigid build... lots of XL action in here...

Welcome!

Re: The Spankster Has Arrived

Welcome John. The chain problem you had is a common problem. Those cases can be welded back to new. There is a company in the mid-west (I would have to search it) that specializes in welding cast aluminum HD cases and have done some amazing work. Also heard of a huy in Mass but again would have to research that.

When I was young I really wanted a used red Sporty that B&D HD had sitting on the show room floor - I never got that bike, so about 12 years ago I found a red Hugger with the small tank and bought it. Wrong bike for a guy 6'4" but plowed that into the side of a Nisson. Now I atually miss the bike.

Spankster is doing some very cool mods to that bike. I don't understand em, but very cool technical mods.
