Wintertime Superglide updates

Here's year three of wintertime maintenence and changes. Don't anyone get excited... this ain't a build... just a freshening up. The only outward thing I have planned is some apes to replace my existing buckhorn bar. Only thing unusual about this is I'll run the wiring inside to clean things up some.

Anyway, this project almost didn't get off the ground... literally! Farting around with the (borrowed) lift, I knocked the spring off my kickstand. OK, fine... I grabbed a Vicegrip.... sheeeeit! I couldn't pull that spring 1/3 of the way out.

Well... you want to see what the power of a forum such as this one brings? I got hold of Hooty... told him about my trevails... Yup- he's been there, done that, got the t-shirt...

This spring was 3" between coils... and needed to go 5-1/4", and there was nooo way I could pull it. Well, at Hooty's direction, I rigged up a emergency puller with my old woodworking vice, and a couple 1/4" lag bolts. I jacked out the spring (with difficulty) to 5-1/4", and stuffed all the coil spaces with 3/8" washers.

It worked like a charm! Popped that spring right into place! Then I just pulled out the washers with pliers.

How many washers? A shit-load!

Uhhh... we all know this... but Hooty is the man!!!

That is a good trick.

Naw, Mutt... the X-acto was for the last thing I did out there... cutting scrapbook stuff for my bride. The calculator? I'm an engineering sorta poser... calculators are never far...

These buckhorns are going bye bye!

Lifted this off Mutt's comment on another thread:

Big D, there is an adapter made to lift the FX's. My buddy has one, he runs the bike up on some blocks cause with the adapter the lift won't fit under the bike. It takes some thinking but once it is worked out it works like a charm.

Here's how I do it... pain in the ass as it is. (This, because there's an unequal frame design under a FX Twin-cam, and the tranny/crank sump pan hangs below the frame. There's an armor rib on the right side.

So: with an uneven garage floor, a borrowed Craftsman lift, the right side is blocked up with a 2-1/4" oak block in the front, 3/4" oak block on the armor rib, and the left side get's 1-1/2" blocks. This clears the stand, and the pan.

I'm sure everybody's cringing at this Keystone Kops mod/maintenence thread... stick around! It'll get funnier!

Hey D, far be it from me to tell some one how to work on their bike, but if your changing the bars, why did you take the rear wheel off. You going to go the long way around ? LOL
Just kidding ya man.
