Re: Superglide updates- 2012 edition
The motorcycle gods gave me a Mulligan here... and let me have three years to fix the following mistake I made...
When I went to 12" apes 3 years ago, I thought I did due diligence when I measured and ordered my clutch cable. Nope- an inch too short. The routing made it too close to the front motor mount. The wear in the cable sheath where the pencil is pointing is a hole where the motor mount wore in it underneath the bike with vibration. Now that part of the clutch cable is part of the tranny sump under there, and it started leaking a year later. So I prolonged things by slicing a piece of schedule 40 pipe lengthwise, and clamping it on. I sealed the sheath with silicone when I put it on, but it still leaked some.
Enough to make a mess of the underneath. Greasier than a shovelhead barn find...
Well, a longer clutch cable will be here soon enough... but I'm clamping this li'l armor plate to the new one, too.
How's that water pipe nipple mod for bitchin' fabrication skills?

Looks like a lot of work ahead, I just hope you can remember how to put it back together. I have a few projects too and am hoping the same for mine.

Re: Superglide updates- 2012 edition
Well... been rubbin' on it... You saw that stuff. Well, next is getting the new drive belt on. Which means getting the primary off. I am NO WRENCH, so I borrowed some enormous tools off a friend, and as a back-up, I have impact tools I can borrow as well.
The manual says "put it in 5th, have an assistant stomp on the rear brake and remove clutch basket nut"
Yeah, right. Almost flipped the bike over.
Plan B was to make my own tool to keep the clutch basket from turning. I made a bolt plate from 3/4" oak plywood. It has a taper to miss my strap, and fits into the bottom of my jack channel. It worked! I broke the left-hand nut loose.
Well, I didn't understand what was needed to get the compensator nut off, so I added some maple dogs to my fixture to key into the clutch basket. After stripping some deck screws, I moved the screw location and this worked as well. Hot dog! Wooden fixtures! Who knew?
Now this is what happens when you turn a woodworker loose on a motorcycle maintenance job.
Well, my bill of material is growing. My chain tensioner has .090 wear. Shame on me for doing the sport-bike deceleration downshifting, I guess...
I'll get the casting off tomorrow.

Looks like you're having fun now Big D. Cool making a wooden fixture like that. I use an electric impact gun and that turns them off and puts them back on without to much trouble.
For years I didn't have a compressor and I relied on the electric impact for a lot of stuff and even now that I have two compressors I still use the electric.

Re: Superglide updates- 2012 edition
Thanks, Mutt.
Got a couple questions for you wrenches out there... on the compensating nut torque.
1) When this thing goes back together, the book says "THREEBOND TB1360" threadlocker. 'Net propaganda says this stuff is high strength, high temperature. I have Permatex red. Can I use that?
Scratch that question. Permatex has "Red- high strength, high temp", available locally. I'll get that.
2) Torque on the compensating nut is a pretty healthy 150-165 ft/lbs. Whoa! That's bigger than my borrowed torque wrenches. Now, I have a big 20" long box wrench. That means I need to push on the end of this wrench with 90# to 99# to achieve final torque. That's do-able. Do you guys "feel" this, or do you buy/steal/rent a torque wrench?
Funny- this thing broke away without that much umph.
Signed,

Re: Superglide updates- 2012 edition
I've never been one for technicalities......crank it down till you think it's right.
BTW.....why does shit keep falling off and/or breaking?
