mountain bike shock seat springs?

Building a ridgid 250 Sprint for the OL and she is only 4'11" and a little over 100 lbs. was looking at a single Chopper Shox for the seat but kinda spendy and we are trying to keep the costs down and also keep with the Rat bike look. Has anyone used mountain bike shocks for their seat. I've seen it done in magazines and was wondering how well they work and if 2 shocks would be to stiff for a 100 pounder?

Re: mountain bike shock seat springs?

2 would be too stiff in my opinion. Most of them are rated at 350#, I'm 180 and I had 1 on my Kaw, it still felt stiff to me. There's some smaller kids bikes that have smaller shocks on em but I think they are still rated at 250, if I recall. I found the regular solo seat coils to be a lot better, they only bout $10 each depending on where you get em. JMO

I was going to look into them too. Ya have to do some research as there are many different ones on the market. I started to do it then stopped and bought a pair of springs. If you go a single you have to have some kind of frame for the seat to add ridgity to it or the seat will twist to one side (so I am told). Still may look into them when I am back on my feet.

PS If you have a bicycle shop in the area that sells alot of mountain bikes, they may be able to help you through the research.

Re: mountain bike shock seat springs?

I wonder sometimes if they are worth the effort. I run 4 in coil style springs on my enfield and the ride is so so, nothing to write home about. But i realy don't bounce up and down enough to warrant shocks in them and can't see any real advantage. Althou i've never tired them either.
