i feel this is a winning plan triumph valve timing

this is what i have in mind to do today , even thouh its sunny skys and dry weather and the triumph is running . but i know its not dialed in last time i set the cams , i set both of them in the middle of there flat area of the camshafts. i will be little pressed for time but i think i can get it done in a hour or two

and the clook starts NOW.. as follows:

Ignition timing is the easiest part, the CAM timing is not so simple!

first i will need to set the crankshaft first, WITH THE PUSHRODS REMOVED, at TDC to ascertain the pinion marking (should be straight at the top of the pinion), give it a touch of white nail polish to keep track of it.

Next, set up the cams "by the book" so that the appropriate lobes are positioned per the diagrams, about to be actuating the appropriate rockers on the appropriate cylinders.

Now install the intermediate pinion with the proper mark at the bottom, aligned with the crank pinion mark.

Lastly, install the cam pinions with thier marks in proper alignment with the intermediate pinion marks.

When all the mechanicals are done, re-set the crank to 38 degrees BTDC with the locating tool behind the cylinder, and set your static ignition timing.

Should be good to go.

Re: i feel this is a winning plan triumph valve timing

yea kev you got that right! she lives with her boy friend about a block from my house and i'm always going by her house when i'm heading back to the crib sat. night i stopped by just to put 2 cents in her meter, and boy was she nervous , i asked her to get some good rest and sleep and that everything will turn out fine.
my phone went out so i haven't talk to her yet today, im sure they spent the whole day and night more then likely getting to know one another.
she has a new pic. on her myspace main profile pic. with a title on it "jan 11 the day that changed my life forever" so im sure its all good. so now im almost done putting the trumper back together. then i can crus by and see her(my daughter not her momma)and see how it went.
it seems i had the exhast cam pinion keyed to the wrong keyway. i knew the intake had 3 key cuts in it, but i didn't even notice the exhaust had 3 cuts in it also. the only reason i got it to run was just forgetting about any dots or marks and set from basic engine firing sequence junk u know open valve let gas in blow it up and let it out. and i was almost happy with what i rigged it up with. but now will see what she's really made out of. just need to put the tank on an cover back on seal it so no more moister or water get in no more and fire her up . shoudn't take long but when i test her out u know ill be visiting my daughter's crib. so im back at it and ill let u know how it turns out.

p.s. brand spanken new plugs i got yesterday also will change the oil

Re: i feel this is a winning plan triumph valve timing

ever have one of those days? i put all marks and dots where they were suppose to be by using a diff keycut and just backing up valve adj screws all the way then line up put it back together but forgot to back off crankshaft 38degs and now i think there over laping. i'll try pulling off the idler pinion
then set the crank to specs... but..... it.. was running cool before. a one kicker and ur down the road.
so im off one last kick or two . advance the spark on the ign as far as i can if it don't start up ill pull the idler and ....................the fun never stops...........

i didn't give it one kick ..... just pushed it in the garage and pulled my blankie of tools in locked the gate ............and try to think this one out a little more......... now.... their three diff keyway on both cam pinions............crank pin is lock into tdc which puts its keyway slot at 12oclock..........and the specs are different if its a T120R 64 or more cam pos........it seems to me the norm key slot to me would be using key inline with cam pinion marking dot or line and if it was hp off road modle you would be using slot b or c .................phew...... my head hurts!
