Found my next one.

Made a deal on an '81 XS750 shafty today. Gonna take some work to get it running, but I'm picking in up cheap.

Been having trike on the brain lately so that's the direction I'm headed. My B-inlaw is a huge motorhead car scavenger type so I'm hoping he can help me find a rear end, something small and short. At very least, he'll know where I can get it shortened for a reasonable cost. I've got a driveline shop on my FedEx route that seem to be pretty decent guys so I'm hoping I got that covered. Might take me a lot longer to get done than my Kaw did, but I'm hoping it will be worth it.

I'll post some pics of the donor mess on Sun. when I pick it up.
Wish me luck......LOL.

Very cool. I am in the starting stages of a 78 XS750 triple that I am doing old vintage style cafe. Fun and cheap project. Waiting on a couple parts and will reassemble the motor. Beware the triples are plagued with problems. 2 nd gear is a big issue........But they sound great and make nice easy builds. Post a pic if you have one.

Good luck with the trike project: I safetied a Yamaha trike this summer, an XS1100, with what looked like a Chev Vega rear end. Hope this helps. Trashy_biker

Re: Found my next one.

Talked to my B-in-law tonite, he gave me several ideas for a rear end to use without spending much money The biggest expense will be getting it shortened. I'm hoping to only have about 36" between the tires, maybe less. Seems a Ford will be my easiest/best bet, retainers on the ends of the axle housings instead of inside the differential.

Doesn't have to be a 9", bout any rear will work. Don't want a posi or anything, they don't work on a trike very well.
Was thinking today it would be really cool if I could find a really old rear with the old wire wheels and shit. or a rear out of an old MG with the wire wheels.....but dang that'd be lotsa $$$$$$$$$$.

Re: Found my next one.

There is a guy here locally that is using a Suzuki Samari for the rear ends on his shaft style bikes...

That would be very cool with the old spokes.
