Re: New project starts tomorrow

I ordered my rear bracket from Fab Kevin, he will ship it out next tuesday. Then I'm down to needing just a front master cylinder, some brake lines and a few other small things. Then I can really get rocking on finishing it up...

Re: 1979 HD FXS project Progress.....

Roger: I know it was a few pages back but thanks for posting the pictures of the tank lift. That looks simple and clean really like the way it exposes the motor.
The rest of the build is really coming along. I see you are using Suzuki brakes. Did you change master cylinders or did the stock ones give you enough juice? Trashy_biker

Trashy, I'm per Fab Kevin's recommendation I am putting on 5/8 " mastercylinders. I don't have a mc in front and have to get one..

Re: 1979 HD FXS project Progress.....

Well I have been doing work on 79 FXS, I have the front and rear brakes on, obtained a new seat. I built a rod out of stainless to lock the brake bracket. I also picked up a new rear fender off a 2008 Fat Boy. The fender was never used on the road, he made a trike out of it. I bought a new 5/8 mastercylinder for the front calipers.

I wanted Floorboards, because I'm old. Got a pair from a 2005 Fat Boy, made some adapters to fit them to the 79 frame. Picked up a 2005 mastercylinder for the rear. I'm plugging right along. Down to some small items needed brake lines and fittings. I got a outer primary off ebay and polished it up so that it looks almost like new. Tomorrow I am going to my buddies place and learn how to weld aluminium with a tig. That will fix the inner primary and I can really start putting it togerher.

Here are some pictures, got to post the porn...

Years ago an old guy that I used to work with (he raced board tracks and flat trackers back in the day) said he rode (on the road) only Harleys and always with running boards. He used to say he laughed at anyone with pegs. I thought he was just old but if I knew then how comfortable floor boards are, I would have put them on may old pan head chopper. I love my floor boards especially on long rides.

And yes the bike is coming along great. Money is always a draw back.

Great point, Mutt... In February, 2008 issue of "The Horse" mag, there's a shovel featured with footboards... homemade ones.

I'll quote the builder here:

"If I had bird feet, the bike would have pegs, not boards"

Good stuff! I'm glued to this thread, Roger.

Re: 1979 HD FXS project Progress.....

Well the welding on the inner primary was a flop.. During the process it got a slight warp in it. So I'm saving my pennies and looking for a inner primary that will fit a 79 Fxs.. Still need the brake lines and small fittings. But the inner primary is my major need right now...

Re: 1979 HD FXS project Progress.....

Roger... how "warped" is slight warp? Could you have it normalized or stress relieved? Maybe with the outer primary torqued in place? Or a flat plate torqued down?

I've seen many a outer primary for sale... chrome, and otherwise, but not so many inners...

Good luck Roger!
